What is meant by WAITING LIST

In Sri Lanka, “University Waiting List” under the UGC (University Grants Commission) generally means that a student has not received a final university/course placement in the initial selection, but may still be considered for a vacancy later.

🎓 How it works

UGC selection is based mainly on factors such as:

Z-score
District
The student’s order of course preferences (Uni-Codes)
Number of available places in each course/university
Other UGC selection rules

For example:

A student applies for Medicine, Engineering, IT, Science, etc.
Their Z-score is sufficient for some courses, but because available places are limited, they may not receive a place in the first selection.

If vacancies arise because selected students do not register, decline the place, or move through the selection process, UGC may subsequently consider eligible applicants according to its admission procedures.

⚠️ Important distinction

Waiting list does NOT mean “you are definitely selected later.”

It means there is a possibility of being considered if a suitable vacancy becomes available, subject to UGC’s selection procedure and available places.

The UGC currently provides an online “Detailed Information of Course Selection” service where applicants can check their course/university selection information using their A/L index number.
